Make Room in Your Garden – for a Garden Room

Since the emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic, there has been a fundamental shift in the way that we have had to live our lives.

For many of us, this has necessitated spending a lot more time at home, either through the requirements of lockdown, or simply as a matter of choice.

Even as we make tentative steps back to “normal life”, some of these lifestyle shifts we’ve had to make could well become the new norm. The concept of going to the office, restaurant or gym – something that we would have once taken for granted – has morphed into a whole new level of significance.

Whilst there are plenty of people who are keen to get back into the office environment with work colleagues, the likelihood is that many businesses will decide to keep their staff operating at distance – quite possibly on a permanent basis.

Against this backdrop, it’s little surprise that we ‘ve seen an explosion in demand for garden rooms. Whether it’s for work, rest or play, creating versatile space in the garden is now a top priority for increasing numbers of UK homeowners.

Ways In Which A Garden Room Can Be Put To Good Use

The beauty of garden rooms is that they can perform a multitude of functions. the choice is yours! You could create an office, gym, music room, an area for external dining or chill out space, an extra bedroom when you have guests staying over, an area where the kids can let-off steam – you could even use it as an AirBnB style income generator.

Whatever its purpose, a contemporary-looking garden room can provide flexible, additional living space, as well as increasing the value of your current home.

Will my garden room require planning permission?

Because the size of most garden rooms would be categorised as being within permitted development, in the majority of situations, you won’t require planning permission. In exceptional circumstances, this may be necessary but if you are in doubt, it might be worth having a word with your local planning department.

Do GLG build garden rooms?

Yes, we do! We cover all manner of projects throughout the south of England that come under the umbrella of hard landscaping services. Whilst this doesn’t incorporate general building work, such as house renovations or extensions, we are adept at handling projects that would be described as outdoor living space. A category that very much includes garden rooms!

What is the timeframe for building a garden room?

This will depend on the complexity of the design and construction, but we would normally allow a period of 6-8 weeks from start to finish. Prior to this, we would undertake a full site survey and provide you with a detailed quotation before commencing work. Demand for these rooms is currently very high, so there may be a slight delay before installation gets underway, but once we start, it will be a case of full steam ahead to get your room ready as quickly as possible!

What materials are used to construct the garden room?

From the foundations to the roof, all the materials we use will be of a high standard. The specification can be tailored to your requests, i.e., the types of wood or cladding, colours, insulation, fixtures and fittings etc. We can formulate a package that meets your budget. Whatever your choice, we will always guarantee a quality product.

Can an existing garage or shed be turned into a garden room?

Certainly! It will largely depend on the state of the construction, but if we can work with an existing structure – and it’s already well-positioned – then it may be the best option. In most cases, it is normally more practical to start from scratch and build from new.

Alternatively, it is also possible to adapt an existing garden room. For instance, perhaps you’ve been using the space as a weight room/gym but, with changing work circumstances, you now need to adapt the space into a full-time office. You aren’t necessarily lumbered with one option – flexibility is a big selling point of the garden room format.

What is the cost of a garden room?

We can install a templated modular design or create a bespoke style, in keeping with your specific requirements. As there is no one-size-fits all, we would cost each project on an individual basis. But rest assured, the price will always be competitive!
